U.S. Nuclear Weapons in Canada’ is a follow on to John Clearwater’s earlier work, ‘Canadian Nuclear Weapons: The Untold Story of Canada's Cold War Arsenal’. This 1999 follow-up contains information that had just been released on the negotiations, storage and eventual withdrawal of the nuclear weapons stored on Canadian soil for use by the United States armed services in case of war.

Considering the complexity of the various agreements between Canada and the US involving this topic, it is hard to fathom that our armed forces ever acquired as many nuclear weapons as it did for its own defence and offensive use.

As with his earlier work, Clearwater shows a tremendous depth of research within the pages of this book. Once again, it is a ‘must read’ for any Canadian military historian. Oh, and once again, prepare to be surprised by the content.

The reader will be left wondering how Canada’s squeaky-clean ‘peace-keeping’ image ever came about, considering the quantity of nuclear weaponry laying around the country

As a military historian, I wish everyone could read this book if for no other reason than to be forced once and for all to forget the ‘theory’ that our Canadian Forces have only been about ‘Peacekeeping’.

This well written history of Canadian Nuclear Weapons will take the reader through the political intrigue of when Canada acquired its first nuclear weapons system to how at one point, our entire military defence and offence was almost totally nuclear.

The author also points out the other weapons systems possesed by Canada such as the Argus Long Range Patrol bomber which although not armed with them, was fully equipped to deliver a nuclear payload.

I highly recommend this book to any student of Canadian military history or the Cold War.

For those who have not read much on the subject, prepared to be surprised.… (más)
