Horrifying fairy-tale inflected collection of comic shorts. Absolute perfection. Carroll has an eye not only for developing grotesque images, but utilizing them with efficiency so they strike home with narrative weight and beauty.

My only problem with this book is that I want more.

Enjoyed my seasonal re-read of this awesome graphic novel. I'd recommend it for anyone who wants a collection of classically spooky stories!

4.5*

These stories were just chilling enough to satisfy my need for spooky content without outright scaring my pants off, with beautiful and haunting illustrations to match.

Art work was good, but the stories could have been better. I'm not sure why this is rated higher by others.

A nice anthology of gothic horror stories that are beautifully illustrated. The stories all vary in terms of what horror they'll provide, but surely you'll find a neat little gothic story you'll enjoy.

Emily Carroll’s collection of gothic horror comics, Through the Woods, was a beautiful and unsettling read. The art was captivating. The storytelling alluring and creepy. I couldn’t put it down. I highly recommend reading this at night because it just adds to the atmosphere of the stories Emily is telling (or try an early morning).

I personally love hiking in the woods and really like how "the woods" was the main feature in each of the stories.

Her graphic style is unique but it does borrow from others (perhaps most notably: the illustrator Edward St. John Gorey, known for his vaguely unsettling narrative scenes in Victorian and Edwardian settings). However, Carroll's lettering really makes these stories pop. Carroll’s lettering has a handwritten character of its own, and oftentimes the twisting bending nature of the letters and words drive the composition of the pages as a whole, which allows Carroll to move effortlessly through sometimes complex layered montage pages. The effect is really neat.

Carroll's talent is immense. Recommended for fans of Brothers Gimm, Edgar Allan Poe, Stephen King, Edward Gorey.

3/5 maybe 2.5

short, sweet, incredibly abrupt

the bone-chillingness was not strong enough to allow for the brevity

lastly, if i were british i'm sure i would think this was scarier

While the art in this horror short story collection was beautiful, the stories were confusing. I never really knew what was going on. Two of the five stories had endings that didn't seem complete. I think this wasn't as creepy as I have heard others say it is.

I recommend looking through this for the art.

I'm not a fan of graphic novels, they are just over too soon for my liking. But this, this was just stunning and gorgeous and creepy and terrifying. Invaded my dreams last nigh and I woke up cold and a bit shaken.

The imagery in this book is so beautiful and weaves itself with the text in the most perfect way. Loved it so much.

This is a chilling and masterfully crafted collection of eerie tales that feel like a more modern riff on the Grimm's brothers' tales, with their own fantastical twists. While all five stories are different, they each have a common setting: the woods. Carroll's mesmerizing artwork and storytelling transport readers to a world where darkness lurks just beyond the shadows. Carroll's haunting stories are told alongside beautiful illustrations using just three colors: black, white, and red. The effect of these stark colors and vivid images creates a haunting atmosphere that sticks with the reader long after they've closed the book. All of the stories end with a cliffhanger, inviting the reader to use their imagination even more. The horror of Carroll's work exposes themes of guilt, jealousy, and rage at expectations, drawing the reader in and keeping them captivated throughout.

Very quick read. I didn't find it scary at all, not even creepy. I still really enjoyed it. Gorgeous illustrations!

I like how creepy the illustrations made the stories feel. Some of the stories felt unfinished and it took away from the creepiness.

Five creepy horror stories that can best be described as folk tale horror, all centering around the woods. Loved the illustration style.

A few short horror stories relating to forests. I didn't find them particularly terrifying or scary, maybe just a little creepy. The illustrations are nice.

Certainly strange enough. Of the five stories in this graphic novel, Our Neighbor’s House lingers, as does A Lady’s Hands Are Cold, though mostly because of the rhyme. His Face All Red, and Janna felt a little disjointed. The Nesting Place has no actual surprises, but made me chuckle. The intro and end are fun, but nothing more. I love the style and atmosphere created, but only liked rather than loved.

Wowzers. These were genuinely creepy stories that have left me thinking about them. And the art is fabulous, so terrifyingly evocative. Carroll's use of colour and text as part of the story and to build atmosphere works to great effect.

I definitely want to buy this one (I read it through the Toronto Public Library).

4.5 stars
I love the artwork in this story collection. Carroll has an unconventional approach to how she fits everything on the page, and the configuration of panels and larger drawings plays a big part in the storytelling. The lettering has a sense of urgency to it, and she switched up her color schemes in creative ways. It all worked together to set the perfect tone for scary stories. The Nesting Place and My Friend Janna were my favorites.
It's a winner of a book, and I hope to see more from this author.

The artwork and lettering are well-done, but it's all a bit too macabre for my taste. I probably should have known it wouldn't be up my alley, but I couldn't resist the lovely textured cover with the opalescent color effect.
