Game On is one of this year's Quick Reads selection. Some are abridged versions of an already published book and some are stories written especially for Quick Reads, which includes Game On.

I love Matt Cain's books so I had to get this book (and at only £1, why wouldn't you anyway?). It tells the story of Tom Horrocks, who plays football for Toddington FC, and Cosmo Roberts, a journalist. When they meet they really hit it off, but Tom is very firmly in the closet and Cosmo is openly gay. Knowing what the world of football is like, Tom is afraid of coming out.

Despite being a short book, Game On is a fully rounded story that I enjoyed reading very much. It tackles (excuse the pun) a difficult issue in an uplifting way and towards the conclusion I was feeling quite tense for the characters and hoping they would be able to work out all the problems they were facing. Doing so in the full glare of the public eye is really challenging for Tom and I was so pleased with the way the story ended. I spotted a mention for another of Cain's much-loved characters which was a lovely surprise and which made me smile, just like this whole book did.

Game On is a feel-good story which is full of Matt Cain's inimitable joy and enthusiasm shining through on every page.

Contemporary romance is generally not my genre of choice, but once and a while I don’t mind dipping in to remind myself of the sweet and simple moments in life - and to get a break from the generally darker tone of the books that populate my TBR. This story, which follows ice cream man Ted (seriously, how do we not have a better word for person who works at an ice cream shop…), as he navigates the aftermath of his husband’s affair and their subsequent split. Ted has always played it safe, only going as far as coming out to his family but allowing himself to be closeted from his passions (being a performer) and continuing down the expected path of inheriting his family’s ice cream business. This may seem like a pretty good set up, but when combined with the subtle (though it really isn’t) criticisms of his husband, Ted has become a shell of a man and finds little real joy in his life. His story may be a bit expected in terms of the mid life crisis themes (we have the new relationship, new hobby/career, and confrontations galore), but as Ted makes the hard decision to revitalize himself we can’t help but be caught up in his story and unable to put the book down until he gets his happy ending! Matt Cain’s writing is a touch lacklustre, considering the exciting and occasionally literally glittery events, but it’s easily accessible and doesn’t seem to hinder any connections with the characters or bringing the setting to life. Maybe it’s meant to be a little dry to get started, as a method of mimicking Ted’s transformation, since by the time he starts experimenting with drag we’re too caught up in the story to notice any awkward transitions, and by the triumphant finale (with Ted on stage in Manchester in full drag no less!) his warmth and enthusiasm have seeped into the story and our hearts. Sweet and simple, I can definitely see this book being a little treat for readers, and pairing perfectly with ice cream on a sunny day at the beach - though Ted would want to swap out the ice cream, of course!… (más)

Hollywood A-lister falls in love with a paparazzo but is publicly dating her closeted leading man.

Cute and engaging, but does everybody have to have had a difficult childhood?

One Love begins in 2022 with long-term friends, Danny and Guy, arriving in Manchester for Pride weekend. Guy is now single for the first time in ages, and Danny is determined that he will finally tell him that he loves him and has done for twenty years. The story follows the pair over the course of the weekend and also takes us back to 2002, when they first met at Manchester University, and then we witness the ups and downs of their friendship over two decades.

As I've come to expect with Matt Cain's books, this is a heartfelt and engaging story of love and friendship that is so easy to read and so full of the depths of human emotions. I loved the two main characters, like chalk and cheese in their behaviour, with Danny being camp and brash and Guy being quite the opposite, more reserved and straight-laced. There are some wonderful supporting characters too, particularly Danny's mum, Eileen, and her friend, Arthur, who both provided me with lots to smile about.

I didn't know how Danny's revelation to Guy would turn out but this is ultimately a story about acceptance. The two men have to negotiate coming out to their families and friends, but they also have to accept themselves for who they truly are and it's a journey they undertake that in many ways takes the full twenty years of their friendship.

Heartbreaking and heartwarming in equal measures, One Love is a delightful story that I looked forward to picking up, with characters that I thought were brilliantly portrayed, and a poignant and candid storyline.
