When “My Life as a Killer” becomes a bestseller, author Sidney Meyers finds herself the keynote speaker at the Readers Unite convention. But, thanks to a “fan” using the name IWriteAlone harassing her through email, she’s lost her confidence, struggles to write anything, and is thinking of breaking her contract with Twisted Thriller Books.
But her fiancé, Matt Wilson, is in her corner, even though she’s postponed their wedding. In the hotel restaurant, they unexpectedly meet a Cole Murphy, a friend of Sidney’s from high school. Cole invites them to sit at his table, and they join him and his girlfriend, Tess. An invitation to stay at their quiet country home is offered during their conversation, but Sidney doesn’t think too much about it.
When they discover their hotel room has been broken into and her things destroyed, Sidney wants to change the flight plans and go home. But Matt convinces her to take Cole and Tess up on their invitation to stay at the country home.
It isn’t long before Sidney realizes that something is not quite right and all is not as it seems.
What are Cole and Tess hiding? And what does it have to do with Sidney?
=========
The setting for this disturbing tale is definitely creepy and readers are sure to encounter several “I didn’t see that coming” moments. The original plot is inventive, filled with surprises and unexpected twists, and readers will to find it difficult to predict what will happen next. The undercurrent of tension throughout the telling of the tale is sure to make readers uneasy, but the characters and the action in this thriller will keep those pages turning.
Although Sidney’s insecurities sometimes make the reader cringe, the characters are believable, well-drawn, and fleshed out. The short chapters keep the action moving at a satisfying pace as readers are likely to want to see what comes next.
Secrets upon secrets upon secrets . . . and readers are certain to be surprised by some of the revelations. Readers who enjoy thrillers will find much to appreciate in this unputdownable tale that inescapably races toward a denouement they simply will not coming.
Highly recommended.
