Not the typical book I'd seek out, I saw it on some must-read list and was intrigued by the title. I'm so glad I did. I found this book completely touching and very interesting. Brown offers a peek inside a culture completely different from what I know. I was instantly heartbroken for Nachum (the way he was treated early by family and friends made me cry) and I felt their mother's love and determination. I'm grateful to the author for sharing her and her brother's story-- This is Not a Love Story really struck me.… (más)

i have to confess that i had hard time in the very first part of the book, i truly could not believe how a little girl could consider in such way her brother nothing more that a wart to cut out and hidden away......
i was near to leave the book.....but i was curious about a possible twist...-.. that came....
the second parte of the book was a for me a complete page turner....the possibility that in any circumstances and situation there is allways a way to change in better, the beauty and the positive could find a place to shine

( i an not english native, sorry for my grammar and syntax)

This is a memoir of a family struggling with autism in the 1980’s and ‘90’s when autism is not yet fully understood, diagnosed or dealt with. It is told with the earnestness, naiveté, humor and gentleness, of a sheltered ultra-Orthodox eight-year-old girl, one of six children, dealing with a younger brother who is “crazy”. She questions why they are “cursed” by this boy who causes turmoil for the family. Her life in this strict, insular, and proscribed world for young girls is full of misinformation, ignorance, prejudice, myths and rumors. She is given incomprehensible reasons for her brother’s affliction. She prays for a miracle and tries to bargain with God. Catskill bungalow summers and vivid images of Jerusalem and Brooklyn neighborhoods come alive. Her mother’s search, anguish, and prayers for a better life for her special son as she refuses to “put him away” are inspiring. It is a long process but he slowly learns language, appropriate behaviors, and to connect with people in limited ways. As they grow, an emotional brother-sister bond develops and there is a hopeful and upbeat ending.
Brown provides excellent and understandable explanations and discussions of autism in documenting how a special-needs child affects the coping mechanisms of each member of a family.
