Best short update about opinions and research: Sam Smiles, Turner: In and Out of Time. 'The construction fo a Modernist lineage for Turner, based on his last works, is therefore unwise and unhelpful.' Of course that is correct although one cannot escape comparing it with some impressionists, esp. Monet studies of different lightscapes at different (times of the) day.
