I read every word of this book and still have no idea what the hell actually happened. I understand that the author labored over this book for 14 years, but I think that's part of the problem: he crammed five books into one. You've got your futuristic dystopia, your hard sci-fi, your tale of a troubled guy down on his luck, and your unreliable narrator mystery, and your quaint folktale. It's too much and the end product is too messy to be coherent.

Also, those footnotes. Dear god, those pointless, troublesome footnotes. Why did his editor not tell to cut that nonsense right out? Ugh.

And here's an unsolicited tip: Avoid the audiobook on this one. The narrator does a great job, but the text is even more incomprehensible in that medium.… (más)
