Adam and Lucy are happily married. Or are they? What changed? With Lucy’s pregnancy, she’s forgetful; forgetting to turn off the stove or lock the door or forgetting whole or partial conversations they had or things she did.

And there are gaps in her life that she doesn’t know what happened until Adam tells her the terrible things she’s been doing. Including the time Lucy stabbed him. But why doesn’t she remember? She only remembers waking up the floor after a terrible argument with no memory of what she has done.

Being married to Adam has become a nightmare. For both of them. Lucy has no confidence in anything anymore. She has become estranged from family and friends. If she is this confused and dangerous now, what kind of mother will she be? Adam is gradually becoming a tyrant; exasperated with having to babysit a wife who can’t seem to handle even the simplest tasks and is a danger to herself and everyone else.

Hoping it is just “baby brain”,a symptom of pregnancy and hormones, she hopes once the baby is born, life will go back to normal and she and Adam can go back to being happy and put this nightmare behind them. But the nightmare isn’t over.

All too realistic is this story of Lucy whose increasing panic about what is happening in her head. It chips away who she is and she becomes chips away who she is and she becomes a shell of her former self. From a confident strong woman, she has become “pathetic”and a burden; someone she doesn’t even know and it increases as Adam becomes more mean and hateful as he is thrust into a life he didn’t sign up for.

Our emotions are tested; I cringed with every cruel word Adam said, and felt such sympathy for Lucy as she quickly loses sense of reality and is terrified that the result will be Adam leaving her. This is a gripping well told story although I felt it went on a little long as we are well aware of what’s happening long before Lucy has a clue. I still thoroughly enjoyed it and wanted to read it cover to cover and not put it down. This is the first book I have read by this author and definitely won’t be the last. I’d give it a 4 1/2.
