This is a great resource for anyone wanting to learn more about chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia. This is more than just a medical book giving health definitions, it is a story of a lady who has battled both of these illnesses and have found ways to make her life better in the midst of pain.
We see in the beginning of the book that after living for a few weeks in a fog that the author was determined to get her life back. She made an appointment with the doctor and stated she was done with the pills and her physician stopped seeing her. One thing she learned was to not depend upon a doctor, rather she sat out to read, listen and learn more about what was going on within her body and found ways to try and improve the symptoms. Being positive and never giving in to the pain was paramount in finding ways to beat the intense level of pain.
Chapters 7 - 11 are very helpful and insightful. It is here that she has some major transformations and begins to look beyond just the pain in search of something that would help her improve. She later declares that having these two issues within her life caused her to focus on what was really important in life. She has learned how to spend her time and energy wiser.
Later in the book there are summaries and strategies given that are a great resource. The author also includes a place for the reader to write their own issues down. Having a journal and recording what is happening to the individual is so important in knowing what to do to bring about healing.
There are also sections for: Medications and Supplements as well as a Resource Guide listing websites of help groups. This is a very well written and insightful book. it is easy to read and understand without getting bogged down in deep medical language.
I was provided this book from reviewthebook.com for my honest evaluation. 4 of 5 stars.

Strategies: A Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia Journey
By Tami Brady
Published by Baker & Taylor, Ingram Book Group ISBN 1932690484
Given to me by publisher through arrangement with ReviewtheBook

Tami Brady was a winner: She was one of the few graduate archaeologists able to work in the field of archaeology rather than drive a taxi or flip burgers. She succeeded in everything she tried to do. She supervised digs; she wrote; she journaled. She was married with two children.

Tami Brady was a loser. She was a perfectionist; her best wasn't good enough, and less than her best she simply wouldn’t do. She was in constant pain and exhaustion from chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. One day both legs gave out and she was stuck in a hole for a while. She forgot things in the “fibrofog” of lost memory.

Finally she managed to put the two sides of herself together and figure out to what extent her winning abilities caused, or at least triggered, her losing qualities. She was able to determine what she could do to get rid of the perfectionism and to ease the suffering of her ailments.

Not content with solving her own problems, she put together this book, which first details her wins and losses so that the readers may join her in figuring out the causes/triggers of their ailments, and see which of her solutions can help them. She goes on to create a chart of what to do if such-and-such a problem or such-and-such a disease trigger occurs, and then continues to create a workbook whereby the reader can determine his or her own triggers and figure out what helps them to heal as quickly as possible.

As a long-time sufferer of these two ailments--I am presently writing with a severe backache, and can't take any more meds until four hours from now--I can assure you that I will be trying out her suggestions. I already know that some of them work, and I expect that others also will help me. I recommend this book to anyone fighting chronic fatigue syndrome or fibromyalgia, and particularly to those unfortunates who are combating both at once.

And having said that, I am going to follow Tami's advice and make myself horizontal for a while.

PS—I feel much better now, thank you.

Independence means different things to different people. Tami Brady, the Author of Regaining Control: When Love Becomes A Prison, has written an excellent book that speaks to all women, regardless of their personal situation and views on independence.

It's a sad fact of life that many women will live at least part of their lives in poverty, or at the very least, have a tough time making ends meet, often while attempting to raise their children without a spouse or helpmate. Oftentimes through no fault of their own, they will be left in less than ideal circumstances. Reading this book and following the steps and guidelines can help you move beyond your current circumstances.

Written in an upbeat, easy to understand style, Regaining Control helps lead you through the questions you need to ask yourself to plan for your future well-being. Touching on many types of problems, personality issues and lifestyle situations, the author shows that change is possible, and lays out in great detail how to succeed to meet your needs. Any reader will find the checklists, questionnaires and forms to be useful. The book will help you find what's truly important to you, and guide you through the process of setting goals and breaking them down, turning them into steps that are easier to reach, and less overwhelming than looking at the big picture without a gameplan.

My daughter works with abused women in an emergency shelter. When she saw this book, she was excited and impressed to have access to an easily understood, easy to follow manual that she could recommend to her clients. That speaks volumes, in my opionion, about the usefullness of this book.

Esta reseña ha sido escrita por los Primeros Reseñadores de LibraryThing.
Let me begin by saying I didn't read this completely, but skimmed it. I requested the title because my housemate has severe, disabling fibromyalgia, and when I received it, I passed along the book, thinking she might be interested.

Unfortunately, her thoughts were in line with CozyLover's disappointment paragraph, and any pretense of getting an unbiased review went out the window when she told me the book expressed the sentiment that "Fibromyalgia is a positive experience." That statement removed any desire of mine to actually finish the book. Right now, it remains somewhere under my bed - I'm not going to pass this along on a bookswapping site, because I wouldn't want someone else hurt by the book's assertions.… (más)
