This book is excellent for those children who may be or whose parents or relatives may be deaf. They will learn the basic signs for each letter of the alphabet plus a few words that start with that letter.

This book is great for teaching kids or adults just learning sign language a few of the basics. It covers the numbers, alphabet, animals, common household objects, and everyday actions giving you pictures on how to sign them. It also uses the characters from Sesame Street so kids have something familiar to draw them into the book.
My daughter LOVES this book. She is only two but she likes the characters and bright colors and is even learning some of the signs by me doing them with her. She sees what the characters are doing and recognizes it as something she does every day then asks me a question about it to find out more. I love it because it is teaching her to be an active learner by asking questions about her environment.
I think this would be a great addition to any classroom. Kids who were learning sign language could use it as a quick and interesting way to learn some of the basic signs. Or, if you allow students to get books during times where they have nothing else to do, it would be a great way for them to pick up something new and interesting. You could also use it if you had a person in your class who used sign language to help the whole class embrace the child and learn something from their world.

I've had this book as long as I can remember. I've recently started taking ASL classes and I got it out again. I like the way this book gives you lots of illustrations for signing prompts, but if you are looking for ASL help, this book is not for you. The sentences it gives as examples are Signed Exact English. Some of the signs are different now as well. It could be useful for parents who are teaching their babies simple signs.

Summary:
An ABC 123 book for young children starring the Sesame Street Characters of the 1970's and 1980's. This book can be read to a child for deeper understanding or simply looked at by younger kids. Words of importance are underlined and italicized and photographs as well as drawings cover the pages. Other languages are explored as well as sign language. Stories are told throughout that engage the reader to answer questions and ask some of their own.

Review:
A great ABC book this may not interest young readers of today who are looking for the newer Sesame street characters to deliver the same stories. The book does have many great stories and activities for children of k-5 to read and do. It may be too young for the older kids unless they are reading it to a younger crowd.… (más)
