This is the story of Gaine Cannon, a country doctor practicing in the Blue Ridge Mountains of NC. The story follows his later years and shows his dedication to his professions and the mountain people he loves.

An old-fashioned tale of brave men and strong women, faithful servants, and decadent foes. The real hero of the story is the county, which characters praise and condemn as "the fountainhead of independence." The author also gives lovingly detailed descriptions of how the land of Piedmont North Carolina looks in different seasons. There are scenes of battle and rueful reflections on lives cut short. The description of the approval of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence will bring tears to the eyes of anyone with a grain of sympathy for this document.… (más)
