Very good view of the war from the view of the guns of a Canadian field regiment, in this case 4 Field Regiment, Royal Canadian Horse Artillery. More on the realities of battle, e.g., lice, than on strategy.

Blackburn's descriptions detail some of the most mundane and commonplace subjects with a style that is at once insightful and memorable. He presents the war as he saw it, what he knew and what he didn't know, how he felt and what he thought. A worthwhile read.

Provided insight about what happened to the author, but never got a good feel for how he felt. The style was somewhat disjointed, jumping back to training in Canada after relating experiences in England. Overall though, not bad.
