Strange Medicine: A Shocking History of Real Medical Practices Through the Ages
by Nathan Belofsky

This was some interesting stuff! Totally gross, terrifying, what-were-they-thinking vibe throughout the book! Especially the rich people! They seemed to get the latest fad surgery just to get it! Yikes!

It started out with just the medical ideas of the time then the treatments and surgeries. It went through time, can't remember the date when it started but ended in 1900s.

I had read about some of these things before but most of this was new to me and I read a lot of this weird stuff! Lol!
Really enjoyed it! I got this on Chirp and narration was terrific!

An interesting read. It made me glad I was born when I was otherwise I might have been blistered and forced to consume dead frogs and powdered birds beaks for my arthritis. This book shows how far medical science came, fell and then returned. Filled with humor, the book draws together the history of the horrendous art of healing. I enjoyed it, it is a quick read, something you could polish off in a few uninterrupted hours. I would recommend this book if you like the quirky side of history, are interested in medicine and enjoy a laugh. The extensive bibliography gives you plenty of follow up reading if you fancy finding out more on a particularly odd topic.… (más)

Strange indeed and often quite gruesome. Good booktalk for adult or high school audiences.

The Book of Strange and Curious Legal Oddities, by Nathan Belofsky, is a trivia book divided into eight chapters and concerning odd laws from countries around the world and from different times throughout history. The first chapter concerns ancient laws, the second local statutes, the third general oddities, the fourth laws related to animals, the fifth laws pertaining to food and sex, the sixth laws governing leisure activities, the seventh human relations and the last laws that even lawyers can't understand, so full are they of lawyer-speak. Written in a nicely breezy style, this is a book best dipped into from time to time rather than read from cover to cover. Interesting stuff, but (obviously) trivial.… (más)
