Warriors by Krista Bell is two stories in one. The fictional narrative follows Vincent, a Chinese/ Australian boy travelling through China with his father. The story takes place the evening before their visit to the Terracotta Warriors in Xi’an. As they sit in a restaurant having dinner, Vincent’s father tells him the stories of how the Terracotta Warriors came to be made and how they were found 2000 years later. In addition to the fictional narrative, the reader is given background non-fictional information which gives them a taste of Chinese history and culture.(from the teachers' notes). This is a nice little story about a boy who raced pigeons. The time period is during WW11 and the boy's favourite pigeon is taken from him to become a carrier pigeon for the Australian soldiers in Papua New Guinea. The pigeon successfully carries a message that saves a platoon and is awarded the Dickin Medal for bravery. Eventually the pigeon is returned to the boy (as it was wounded during its life saving flight). Review by Fiona
