This, being a sort of domestic psychological thriller, isn't my usual type of read, but I enjoyed it. I don't want to say too much about it to avoid giving away spoilers but it concerns two timelines and viewpoints: Anna in London and Livvy in Bristol. Anna is suffering from amnesia following a car accident which her husband Stephen admits he caused, and Livvy has a young baby and a husband, Dominic, who resents time taken away to spend time with her parents and sister, since he claims to have had a difficult childhood and is estranged from his own parents. He also seems set on undermining her confidence and sabotaging her chances of returning to work on a promotion at her old workplace.

Gradually, it becomes clear that both women are being manipulated. I didn't foresee a major development which occurs quite late on in the story and it was a feat well pulled off by the writer. The only thing that prevents me giving this full marks is that it is stretching it a bit to have Livvy so willing to cover for Dominic's increasingly obvious emotional abuse and gaslighting. But I would rate it overall at 4 stars.

Predicable, yet still enjoyable.

I figured this book out at 48% in but it was still a great read! The author does a good job of giving a sense of uneasiness to the story without being too obvious.

When Anna Bradshaw wakes up in a hospital bed in London, she remembers nothing, not even her loving husband, Stephen. The doctors say her amnesia is to be expected, but Anna feels cut adrift from her entire life.

In Bristol, Livvy Nicholson is newly married to Dominic and eager to get back to work after six months’ maternity leave. But when Dominic’s estranged mother appears, making a series of unnerving claims, Livvy is sucked into a version of herself she doesn’t recognise.

It’s hard to review this without undermining the plot (you’ll understand if you read it to the clever end).
It’s about 2 women who are victims of the worst kind of male controlling behaviour. Actually, that’s too kind. The men are expert manipulators.
Beckerman writes the story in chapters that alternate between the two women, who appear to have nothing in common apart from gaslighting husbands. It’s easy to get confused, but the resolution is worth the effort.
