Barrar's slim book highlights the sense of 'disjunction' that the New Zealander feels on seeing cabbage trees in England. Peter Simpson in his essay also uses a Russian term 'ostranenie' or making strange. But also and particularly in the cover photograph and the photograph of the pruned cabbage tree, the viewer gets a feeling of what reverse colonialism is like.
