nonfiction/sewing. Recommended for beginners--love the clear illustrations and step-by-step instructions. Clothing patterns kind of blah--but provide excellent introduction to techniques: sewing with sheer, slippery fabrics like chiffon; sewing a standard zipper, sewing a fancy origami folded fabric trim (p. 74-75); sewing with denim; sewing with faux leather. I don't think I'll make any of these projects exactly, but I am inspired by some of the home/office projects.

As an experienced sewer, I think this book would be great for any beginner. There is a large variety of projects and once a person masters these techniques and skills, they should be able to improvise many different projects on their own.

Caveat: I haven't yet made any of the projects in this book yet, but many of them *seem* doable for a novice sewer. I particularly want to try "the one-hour skirt," "customized curtains," and "staggering stripes baby quilt"

There's a useful section in the front for "basic sewing tools and supplies":
-all-purpose thread (choose colors to match your fabric; exact match not necessary, choose a shade darker rather than a shade lighter)
-straight pins
-hand-sewing needles ("sharps")
-safety pins
-fabric-marking tools (e.g. tailor's chalk, disappearing ink pen, fabric-marking pencil)
-measuring tapes
-scissors
-rotary cutter, cutting mat, and quilter's ruler (optional but useful)
-seam ripper
-pointer and creaser tool
-sewing machine (most basic model is fine. Read instruction manual!)
-machine needles
-iron ("one of the most important tools in sewing")
-spray bottle and press cloth
-clapper (use a hardcover book, works just as well)
-sewing space

Basic hand stitches: backstitch, running stitch, hand-basting stitch, whipstitch
Machine stitches: straight, backstitch, topstitch, basting, zigzag

Basic sewing techniques: French seam, trimming corners, stitch in the ditch, fusing interfacing, making a strap

Fabric basics: fabric width, right side, wrong side, preshrinking, lengthwise grain, crosswise grain, selvage, bias grain

This crochet pattern book is a collection of 25 different projects from different designers, so you are getting a nice variety.

The three chapters in the book are Bright and Modern Living Room, Tranquil Bedroom and Colorful Kitschy Kitchen. The book jumps right into the patterns and abbreviations and techniques are discussed at the end. I'd say this pattern book is great for crocheters who are advanced beginners and onward. I wish I could stay home and crochet every single thing in this book, they are all so nice. I think it's seeing crocheted items here and there throughout the home, gives any room a nice extra touch.

"Nothing makes a house more like a home than filling it with your own personal touches-and what better way to do that than with crochet? Even if you don't have a ton of time to dedicate to yarn and hook, a few well-chosen handmade accessories will go a long way toward personalizing your abode."
p.5, Crochet At Home: 25 Clever Projects for Colorful Living

I whipped up the Blooming Potholder. The pattern was clearly written, easy to follow and fairly quick to work up. I love the way this turned out and am already working on one for my mom. This is a new favorite pattern!

With such a nice variety of sweet and cozy crochet patterns, Crochet At Home: 25 Clever Projects for Colorful Living has become an instant favorite. I'm happy to have it in my pattern book collection. I recommend this one to crocheters looking to spruce up their home décor or looking to create nice presents for friends and loved ones.
