This work of fiction drew its inspiration from a 1930s medical examiner's log from Cumberland County in Maine. The author has taken each medical report and woven them together into a tale of interdependence, poverty and even supernatural powers. The everyday people of Cumberland County die in apparently natural or accidental deaths with no evidence their death has been deliberate and yet the young doctor and medical examiner becomes more and more convinced the deaths are connected and that he knows who is responsible. The original medical examiner's reports are integral to the story as each one provides a piece of information not found in the body of the novel. However, I read this on a basic Kindle and and it was almost impossible to read the medical reports despite magnifying the page as much as possible and even using a magnifying glass. I believe if the reports had been retyped in the back of the work as an appendix,for those people such as I, that simple step would have greatly increased my understanding and enjoyment of the book. Despite this, highly recommended for those who don't want their mysteries to turn out simply.… (más)
