Nouveau Petit Larousse Illustré 1933. Larousse (1933), Relié, 1760 pages. This lovely tome has as many pages as there yards in a mile. The front cover is very art nouveau; the little illustrations throughout the book are magical - look at the page under sport and the mixed doubles tennis players; look at the frightening bearded figure that jumps out from the 'boite a surprise' on page 999, and the smug man leaning on his fork and modelling his smock-cum-overcoat 'souquenille'.

Easy to lose yourself in these fascinating volumes with thier descriptions of now arcane customs, plus architecture, biographies, maps and plans (eg. a model abattoir).

I enjoyed this hefty red-covered reference book. It got me through many a scrape and search for information. It was always reassuring to have it around and see it on the shelf.
