Frequently irreverent, sometimes thought-provoking, this collection contains primarily poetry with a few short stories and essays. While there are no biographies of the 55 contributors to verify tribal status, most of the selections have a very native american feel to them.
It's hard to read a book of poems straight thru. I had never heard of most of the writers. I did enjoy all of them, but specially marked one by Gene Anderson "Wisdom Literature as Prayers to Coyote", which I felt reads like a prayer, and Carol Lee Sanchez from "Through the Microscope" because it made me reassess labeling somethings as symbols rather than seeing their deep meaning. These poems I'll want to revisit again.
The front page states "Unnumbered special issue of Coyote's Journal", implying that there is (was) an ongoing magazine by that name so I did a websearch and found coyotesjournal.org with description of it's sporadic printing history from 1964-2010 (tho, given the sporadic nature, I'd say it's possible there may yet be a revival of another issue).
