Review from Amazon:

"I read this book in third grade (I'm 56 now). It was the first war-related book I ever read. I loved it, especially the battle maps showing how the various forces were arrayed. The names of generals were forever etched in my mind--Longstreet, Jackson, Burnside, Ewell, Meade, McClellen, Hancock, Reynolds, Sherman, Hood, Bragg, Early, Hill.... Each chapter tells the story of a different major battle. The book is aimed at kids. I've still got my copy on a shelf in my home. It created an enduring interest in the Civil War."

Pretty good post-apocalypse yarn, fast-paced, some nice writing (the sex scenes are cringe-worthy), and an open ending. It may be that I'm being a little hard on it because I paid too much to get it.

Meanders quite a bit and Alter is constantly referring to other books - sort of a chance to have everyone know what he (or his character) thinks about a lot of literature. But toward the end, it really kicks into overdrive and redeems itself.

Tremendous atmosphere makes this a must-read. Ignore the overwrought text on the back cover - it is very misleading about the text as a whole.
