Ishtiaq Ahmed was born in Lahore on 24 February 1947. He holds a PhD in Political Science from Stockholm University. He is currently Visiting Professor at Government College University, Lahore. He is also Professor Emeritus of Political Science, at Stockholm University and Honorary Senior Fellow at mostrar más the Institute of South Asian Studies, National University of Singapore. His research interests cover diverse fields such as political Islam, ethnicity and nationalism, human, minority and group rights, partition studies, civil-military relations in Pakistan, and South Asian politics in general with special interest in Indo-Pak relations. He is currently working on a major study of the ideas and political role of the Founder of Pakistan, Mohammad Ali Jinnah. mostrar menos

It is all of the adjectives that I have used in the title of the review.
It is very readable.
Extremely well researched, and balanced, it gives a marvellous insight into the happenings of the times. It took me some time before I had the courage to read the book, given that this is a rather emotional subject for me.
He starts with a chapter on ethnic cleansing, which I originally thought was not needed. Later, I realised the importance of this chapter.
There were surprises, like the alleged involvement of Sardar Vallabhai Patel. The antagonism between Mountbatten and Jinnah - no surprise.
The individual stories are heartwarming and heartbreaking.
People tend to come together, unless pulled apart by politicians. Sometimes they have tragic consequences like in the Punjab.
A brilliant book, and is a must read.… (más)
