Biografía breve
Alison Adburgham was educated at home before winning a scholarship to Roedean School. Her first job was as an advertising copywriter, and she also wrote articles about manners and style for Clever Night & Day magazine. She married another copywrighter, whom she had four children. After World War II, she began contributing articles to Punch and The Guardian. She was one of the first British journalists to cover the fashion industry and became an expert on fashion history. She served as a governor of the London College of Fashion. She also wrote several books of social history, including Women in Print (1972), now considered a standard reference work for both media studies and women's studies, and Silver Fork Society: Fashionable Life and Literature from 1814–1840 (1983).

I wanted to like this book more than I actually did. The subject is great, and the history is very interesting. Unfortunately, the flow of the text is not as readable as I would have liked. Possibly because it was written in 1975 when standards may have been a little different (or possibly because this was the best the author could do), there were a lot of facts simply dumped into paragraph form, and it really took some effort to get through everything. Again, the facts were interesting, and the history of Liberty of London is entertaining (if you are into that kind of thing), but the highlights got buried in a lot of muck.

This would be a perfect book for an update. The store still exists, and the development of their current tudor-style location is spelled out. Maybe a better editor could do a better job in tying the facts together. But still a recommended read if you have interest in retail history or business development.

The author "salvages pre-Victorian periodicals" published in 18th century England by self-supporting women who contrived to earn money writing, editing, and publishing when it was considered "humiliating" for a gentlewoman to do so. "This book should be regarded as a rescue work" [9]. Many saved themselves from debtor's prison by perforce turning to pen, and often hack-writing. It is a motley but surpassingly "educated" and elegant gallery worthy of great respect.
