The goth kids always looked about as depressed as I felt, so that was a possibility, but I didn’t think they’d let me hang out with them. It’s hard to get in with the goth crowd if you weren’t, like, born a goth. If I tried to hang out with them after years of being The Girl Who Hangs Out with Lisa Ashby, they’d probably call me a poseur or something. The cheerleaders on the other side of the hall probably wouldn’t let me near them, either. One thing I’ve got to give them credit for is that at least they have a formalized processed for joining their group—they have try-outs. The only other groups I could think of that have a process like that are the theater kids, who have auditions, and gangsters, who I always heard make you kill someone for their shoes or something.

I’d driven all the way through Nebraska with Lisa once on the way to an ACTs Jamboree in Denver. Once you got past Omaha, driving through Nebraska is probably the single most mind-numbingly boring thing a person can possibly do. Other than hanging out with Norman Hastings. God, making that drive with him would probably create, like, a black hole on the interstate.

Since sixth grade, Debbie Woodlawn has had a secret crush on her best friend, Lisa. But all those years of pretending to enjoy Full House reruns and abstinence rallies with Lisa go down the drain when her friend hooks up with Norman, the most boring guy at school. This makes Debbie decide to do the unthinkable which means confessing her secret love to Lisa. So Debbie embarks on a quest to find Lisa. Guiding the quest are fellow students/detention hall crashers Emma and Tim, the founding members of the wacky Church of Blue. Chases, many declarations of love, two heartbreaks, a break-in, and five dollars worth of gas later, Debbie has been fully initiated into Bluedaism

I loved this! I want friends like Emma and Tim.

Fun book, but I will have to look at the criteria for the Stonewall award to see why it won an honor.

A madcap night in Debbie's life. Her best friend (and secret crush) for years has a boyfriend she is becoming serious with. This rocks Debbie's world. She meets Emma and Tim after going to detention and they recruit her to The Church of Blue. On Friday night they embark on a quest to complete items of their blue-ish quest list and have Debbie declare her feelings for Lisa. Wacky characters abound, on this journey of self-acceptance and new relationships. It was a fun, feel good romp with likeable, quirky characters.

Debbie Woodlawn has had a crush on her best friend, Lisa, since middle school and any chance of taking the relationship to another level will be lost if she can't confess her feelings before Lisa has sex with a boy. And it may happen tonight. She is helped in tracking down her friend by Emma and Tim who introduce her to their Church of Blue and the philosophy of life they have created.

We follow the three teens in their mad dash around town chasing Debbie's backpack, house keys, money for gas, and ticking off items on their list of quests (seeing another person naked, breaking something valuable).

Even though Debbie has a new age mother and stable home life, she has kept this secret for years and, like so many kids with similar secrets, hadn't found anyone to share it with. Until this day.

Living in the midwest, in the Bible belt, Debbie is lucky to fall in with the group of unlikely friends and it is the readers wish that she will eventually come to terms with her feelings.

girl has had a crush on her best friend for years. tonight she will confess! if she can find her. The church of blue will help with this quest (for $5). This book is hilarious. Actually, scuse me, I'm gonna go read it again instead of writing the review. You should read it too.
