Although this book didn't deal with the exact issue that I struggle with, there were still a lot of great tips for how we can take control of our thoughts.
I found the book to be very interesting and many times humorous. It was also very relatable, does anyone else still think about embarrassing things that happened in high school? Why do we do that? Because of our broken soundtracks.
I thought the research about how people's memories change over time was super interesting!

The New Anthem is really uncomfortable and I haven't started doing it yet, but the research shows that it works so I'd really like to try it. I really think everyone can benefit from this book because I think we all have broken soundtracks playing in our heads that we should put an end to.

I was really hoping to like this book a lot more than I did, but some things seriously bugged me. For example:
1) The constant references to Dave Ramsey, and how awesome he is. Jon Acuff could have written another book extolling the virtues of Dave Ramsey, but instead he crammed them all in here so I could roll my eyes every couple of pages at the blatant, unapologetic hero worship.
2) The frequent and unnecessary reminders of the author's Christian faith. Definitely a major turn-off, and made for an awkward read.
3) He tried way too hard to be funny, and most of the jokes fell flat. I admit I chuckled a couple of times, but that was about it.
4) The sections in each chapter often felt out of place, like they'd been rearranged a dozen times and he'd forgotten to go back and re-edit the flow of the book so it would make sense.

Overall, the content felt rehashed and unoriginal. Acuff quotes a number of other authors whose books are much clearer and more focused than this one. So much fluff here, and not a whole lot of substance. Which is too bad, because I do believe that Acuff has something worthwhile to say. It's just difficult to find among all the humble-brags, irrelevant stories, and bad jokes.

Acuff has a relaxed, conversational style with some humor sprinkled throughout that didn't become annoying or cloying. Quitter is a book designed to get you headed in the direction of your dreams. Its good advice for those just starting to pursue their dreams, and full of good reminders and advice for those who are already in action and perhaps becoming frustrated with their progress. There are no overnight successes.

The only annoying thing to me is his concept of the Nebraska Years. These are the years when, say, if you're a speaker you travel all the way to the wilds of Nebraska to speak to a group of 30 people. Years after you've made it and are now speaking to crowds of thousands, you can look back on your Nebraska Years as your humble beginnings. Okay, so the idea came from an actual experience of someone he knows who is just starting out...but can't Nebraska ever catch a break? Can't the state be glorified as the State That Gave The Young Speaker Her First Break? I am, in part, joking, but friends know I'm a huge advocate for the great, maligned state of Nebraska. But I digress.

This is a motivational book that should get you thinking about your own life and help you focus on staying present rather than living in the future.

And, yes, he is related to Roy Acuff.

If you’ve read ‘Loving What Is’ by Byron Katie and ‘What To Say When You Talk To Yourself’ by Shad Helmstetter - you don’t have to read this book. It’s the same information. I’ve really enjoyed Acuff’s previous books but this I felt was an exact copy of those other books published long before this one and not as well written. I gave it 3 stars because if you haven’t read those other books, this is a shorter synopsis of both and could be helpful.
