4570. 119 Years of the Atlantic, Edited by Louise Desaulniers (read 14 May 2009) This is an anthology made up of one item from each year the Atlantic Monthly was published, from 1857 through 1976. The selections, as is to be expected, are of varying interest. I read it straight through, something I suspect few have ever done. Many of the selections are by prominent people--Oliver Wendell Holmes has two--one for 1857 (the year the Atlantic was started) and one for 1883. The article I thought most interesting and exciting was the one for 1908: "A Record-Breaking Balloon Voyage" by Henry Helm Clayton, which tells of a balloon voyage from St. Louis to New Jersey--872 miles.
