I bought this book, appropriately enough, in Terry, Montana the hometown essentially of Lady Cameron. I first heard about this remarkable frontier photographer from the novel Badland. The only unfortunate part of following up on that story was that the town's museum devoted to her was not quite open the early morning we passed through. The nearby gift/hobby/souvenir shop was open though (and run by a very nice woman who is also the postmistress) and had this excellent book enabling me to finally see the described photographs. The one on the cover is probably one of the best! The contents of the book by Kristi Hager not only include the photographs in question, but captions and context written with wit and in-depth knowledge. I am not sure I have actually read every word of a book devoted to visual imagery but this one was definitely worth it. ( )
Hager not only describes each image, she helps us understand the uncommon and compassionate eye that Cameron brought to her work. "Her photographs, like all great photographs, are a gift," writes Hager. "She shows us her world, and, a century later, the character and clarity of her vision enlarges our own." Premios
