The bombing of Hamburg near the end of World War II. Gomorrah. Nothing is left but parts of walls still standing, rubble, and bodies. A woman crouches with dancing flames attached to her back. They continue their wild waltz until the woman falls, the flames totally consume her, and the short macabre opera is finally over. A small child, until just recently holding her hand, now mindless with shock, continues walking. To where, he does not know.

This is the story of a child growing up in the aftermath of war, discovering the truths of his past, listening to the whisperings of ghosts, and as a young man, finding and losing love.

This novel is the closest thing to perfection that I have read in quite some time. It is Tolstoy stripped bare. It is Shakespeare put to prose. It is to observe every human emotion from within and from without. Beautiful, poetic, sad, and unique in the canon of this type of literature.

Sylvie Germain est un auteur à part, d'une sensibilité extraordinaire pour nous raconter les parcours chaotiques des êtres, le prix de la déchéance, de la chute, de la remontée difficile des pentes, de cet espoir du repos, de cette attente forcenée de l'aube au bout de la nuit.

J'avais lu d'elle La pleurante des rues de Prague, Jours de colère, Eclats De Sel, Cephalophores et enfin Chanson des mal-aimants qui brille comme un soleil noir et splendide. Magnus s'inscrit dans le type de portrait qu'elle a tracé dans la "chanson" : une enfance détruite, un enfant plus ou moins rejeté, un faux père criminel de guerre, une identité incertaine, des amours flamboyants qui se terminent en tragédie, des remises à zéro (l'heure de Gomorrhe) et la paix retrouvée en fin de parcours.

Sylvie Germain sculpte ces personnages avec patience. Dans le présent livre, elle introduit quelques notules explicatives inter "fragments" permettant au lecteur de prendre du recul et de placer l'itinéraire de Magnus dans son époque. On trouve ainsi trace de Bonhoeffer (Vivre en disciple : Le prix de la grâce), de Juan Rulfo (Pedro Paramo), de Stig Dagerman (Automne allemand). Magnus est un livre qui parle également de livres, d'un héros de papier qui semble très réel.

Surtout, et ce qui fait que ce livre est très bien, c'est que l'auteur a un style bien à lui, avec des flambées poétiques indéniables qui vont droit au coeur du lecteur.

Même si je trouve ce livre un degré en dessous de la "chanson des mal-aimants", ce roman est excellent et gagne à être lu. ( )
