This is Teilhard's posthumous statement of his basic attitudes toward religion, evolution, science and faith, published in 1969 in French as "Comment je Crois," and by Harper and Row as "How I Believe." In it, he affirms the universal Christ as the apex of his faith as a Christian and his conviction that evolution is the most basic method of God's creative grace. He states at the beginning of this small book that he belonged by upbringing and education to the "children of heaven," but that by temperament and professional studies he was "a child of the earth." Reading it as an empathetic Protestant, I could see why the Roman Catholic Church officially but unfortunately felt it had to reject most of his life's work. More importantly, I gained a new appreciation for the immense strength of his commitment to blend scientific truth and personal faith, which he defined as "the capacity to reach an intellectual synthesis."
