This is a great chapter book. A kid who gets mysterious shoes with special powers tries to find ways to use them for good. He also solves problems using brain power. I like that his mom went to community college and got a better job and that homework is important. I love that the main character is Latino. ( )

This story follows the adventures of a young boy, Freddie, who finds super-powered shoes that give him inhuman speed on his front porch one day. He discovers what it is - and what it takes - to be a hero. This is a cute book and a great one for beginning/intermediate readers. The few words in Spanish both establish Freddie as Hispanic and serve as good practice for teaching young readers to use context to discern the meaning of unfamiliar words.
Uses: I would definitely have this book and others in the series in my library if I were teaching 3rd or 4th grade. It is a fun and engaging story, and it peaks the interest of boys and girls alike - since a lot of children's books tend to be aimed at girls.
