PIRATES... AND WORSE! is a book based on The Clone Wars series, a part of the STAR WARS franchise. The book is at the 3rd Grade reading level and teachers should note that like most of the books I review there is an Accelerated Reading test available.
The book begins by introducing Hondo Ohnaka and his pirate crew. It talks about what life is like amongst the pirates --fights, feasting, stealing-- before recapping the adventure where the pirates capture Count Dooku (Sith lord), and then Anakin and Obi-Wan (Jedi knights).
In this animated series Jar Jar Binks is a senator and he comes to offer ransom for everyone. The story ends with our heroes free, but with no Dooku at hand.
~
For a book at the 3rd Grade reading level, PIRATES ... AND WORSE! has very few words: only 426. This and the fact that this book is about Star Wars might make it a good choice for reluctant readers. Or contrarily, a good choice for young readers who would like to try something above their normal reading level.
Sample text from 2 pages:
This is Hondo Ohnaka
and his scary gang.
They are all space pirates.
They attack spaceships
and steal treasure.
Here is the text from the page with the most words:
Pilf Mukmuk is the pirates'
monkey-lizard.
He hops ffrom pirate
shoulder to pirate shoulder.
He does sneaky little jobs for the pirates.
But when the pirates are
asleep, he steals from them.>
