I knew I wanted to read Siren almost as soon as I saw the cover. I've learned, from hard experience, that titles are deceptive so I didn't actually hold out hope that the story involved true sirens until I read the backcover copy. And then I was doubly excited. Other than Donna Jo Napoli's Sirena I haven't come across another book I enjoyed about those songstresses of seduction so much.

Parts of the book were hard for me to read without getting a pain in my chest; Vanessa and Justine's relationship (as far as Vanessa's view of it goes) felt familiar to me. I have two sisters of my own, both younger, and it can be hard when you feel as if you lack something they naturally have. Charisma, personality, charm--whatever you want to call it sometimes its just easier to be the shadow.

Though this book is about the mythical sirens, its also about how someone deals with grief and changes in their life. Vanessa has to deal with the grief of losing her sister, of her family splintering apart and her own changing feelings towards a friend she's always depended upon. All of which are hard to do normally and only becomes harder when she starts hearing Justine's voice and finding out that her sister wasn't quite the person she thought she was.

The story didn't focus too long on any one plot point; it shifted between several fluidly without losing traction in any of them. A couple character developments were given only cursory explanations (how Vanessa heard Justine for example), but overall the plot was seamless and paced well. The development of a deeper relationship between Simon and Vanessa felt natural, they both were comfortable with each other and proved their affection in small ways.

I wish we could have seen more of Justine and Caleb together. The small time we did, coupled with others remembering them, felt inadequate. And though the reason Caleb needed more money was heavily implied, I would have liked to know firsthand.

Some of the revelations are game changers. Some become obvious, others are shockers that took a little while for me to adjust to. Rayburn does a wonderful job creating suspense and a sense of foreboding mystery throughout the book. Strange weather patterns, odd townspeople like Oliver, a kind of creepy grandmother like Betty...and let's not forget Justine talking to Vanessa from beyond the grave.

The end fit Vanessa's overall character development I think. Was it the ending I was hoping for? No, but I think it was what the novel needed to feel complete. More than anything it felt as if Rayburn was trying to impress upon the reader a pragmatic viewpoint in life. Wish for the best possible outcome, but understand if you have to settle for the outcome that benefits more than just you. ( )

Il Richiamo della Sirena è il secondo romanzo della serie “Siren” di Tricia Rayburn, trilogia paranormal thriller che aveva già conquistato molti consensi con il suo primo volume “Sirene”.

In Sirene appariva già evidente che l’autrice non aveva nessun interesse a portare avanti lo schema fantasy dei recenti young adult che consisteva nella bella di turno contesa, indecisa, o tutte e due le cose, fra i due protagonisti maschili di turno.

In Sirene il paranormale è così intimamente intrecciato con la realtà e l’aspetto investigativo (seppur portato avanti da una ragazza e non dalle forze dell’ordine) che in alcuni tratti ci dimentichiamo perfino di star leggendo un fantasy. Ma sono le Sirene le protagoniste di questa serie e, ben lontane dalle figure Disney di riferimento a cui tutti potremmo ricollegarci, queste non tarderanno a ricordarlo anche nel secondo romanzo. Sono Sirene: ammalianti, affascinanti ma anche terribili e spietate.

Vanessa, dopo aver fermato le Sirene responsabili della morte di sua sorella maggiore, si rende conto che nel suo passato si nasconde qualcosa di decisamente oscuro, qualcosa che minaccia di distruggere irrimediabilmente i ricordi felici delle giornate in famiglia, ricordi conservati molto gelosamente.

Eppure il suo bisogno di acqua salata in continuazione, la sua capacità di affascinare gli uomini ed il fatto che improvvisamente il resto del mondo sembri vederla come una delle donne più belle del creato, non sono certamente degli indizi ma delle semplice prove di quello che aveva già intuito: suo padre è un traditore e lei è una sirena.

Ma come fare a scoprire qualcosa del suo passato? Come sopravvivere alla sua mutazione e continuare la sua vita da umana senza venir schiacciata dalla sua nuova condizione? Come non perdere Simon, il ragazzo che ama?

Eppure, mentre Simon e Caleb sembrano essere convinti che le Sirene siano state perdute, lei e Paige (ragazza conosciuta in Sirene, nonché figlia umana di una delle sirene assassine), continuano a vederle ovunque mentre strani fenomeni si verificano intorno a loro… Saranno realmente riuscite a fermare Zara, Raina e le altre?

Il Richiamo delle Sirene è decisamente il degno seguito di Sirene, un romanzo intrigante e coinvolgente ma dalla forte presenza di approfondimenti psicologici tutti incentrati su Vanessa che, testardamente, non si arrenderà ai limiti della sua nuova condizione ed è del tutto intenzionata ad avere la meglio e scoprire tutto il possibile sul suo passato.

Nella seconda metà del romanzo vedremo, al centro, l’evoluzione del rapporto tra Vanessa e Simon che sarà tutt’altro che idilliaco, l’arrivo di un nuovo personaggio che contribuirà a complicare notevolmente le cose (no, non avremo un triangolo, tranquilli!) e il ritorno delle Sirene che, ovviamente, non state minimamente fermate dal ghiaccio. Forse giusto un po’ rallentate.

Ci saranno anche sconvolgenti scoperte, conosceremo nuovi lati dei nostri personaggi, arrivi imprevisti e tante lacrime.

Un romanzo di approfondimento, forse di passaggio, ma in ogni caso ricco di colpi di scena che faranno battere il cuore e cattureranno il lettore dalla prima all’ultima pagina.

Un fattore molto positivo? L’assenza del consueto sentimento di claustrofobia che generalmente accompagna i romanzi in cui la protagonista, a caccia della verità, viene continuamente tenuta all’oscuro e finisce per finire nei guai. Tricia Rayburn è stata in grado di scrivere un romanzo paranormal, dai tratti romance – seppur lievissimi -, ma con una carica adrenalinica, tipica dei thriller, che conquista. I personaggi sono delineati in modo chiaro, semplice ma tuttavia accurato in ogni loro aspetto e l’evoluzione di questi è molto concreta e coerente con i fatti e le vicende che li vedono protagonisti. Non ci sono forzature ed il suo stile è fluido, fresco ed accattivante.

Una conferma della bravura dell’autrice correlata da una bellissima copertina anche se il prezzo, per 300 pagine scarse, è sicuramente poco competitivo con i suoi 17,00€ suonati. ( )
