Speedy does not usually use a gun, although in "Nighthawk Trail" he does, but it is only an elaborate illusion. Regarded as one of the most dangerous men in the West, the object of his quest is to find the great horse Nighthawk. Bob Nelson in "The Vamp's Bandit" started out as merely a rowdy ranch hand, but he stepped over the line, and began robbing, such as the night he held up the stage in Porter's Pass. Bart Chambers is convinced that there is one trap that will catch Nelson - often-married but currently single Maybelle Crofter. In "Rifle Pass", ageing Sheriff Thomas Weller has one major problem: his son Dick Weller. Dick cannot seem to apply himself to anything. In a desperate attempt to have Dick's courage tested, the sheriff deputizes his son and charges him with the capture of Harry Sanford. No se han encontrado descripciones de biblioteca. |

The second story,"The Vamp's Bandit", is more credible. In it rancher Bard Chambers asks a local attractive woman to help him save Bob Bell, a young man who has taken up a life of robbery but he feels is well worth saving. The plan is to trick Bob into being a guardian for the woman and thus make him a leave the life of crime. Only Mabel proves too successful when Bob takes after the husband who has left her.
I found the Mabel's dialogue difficult to accept considering the tough character we meet initially. Not a very satisfying read.
The third story is Rifle Pass which first appeared in Argosy Magazine in 1935. Although not a great piece of western fiction, it is much better than the other efforts in this collection. Sheriff Weller is disappointed in his lazy, no good son. To shake him up, he gives him a gun and forces him to go out to capture an outlaw named Harry Sandford which he does. After meeting Harry's sister, he lets Harry go and now Dick Weller is on the run. While a more conventional western plot, it is still weaken by the almost super hero abilities of Dick to escape traps and appear almost at will wherever he is needed in the plot. This is another disappointing Brand effort.
