There wasn't anything that aggravated me but just the general package was subpar.
The cop and his entire demeanour is total bs. At first, it seems he is just carrying out a personal grudge by abusing his power but later the story tries to make us believe he is just very diligent. He is described as following strict procedure but in reality, he does everything but. Basically, all his actions are just there for plot reasons and giggles. The same is true for the stormwalker business. The outcome of basically all fights is dependent on random weather phenomenons that of course are always just as they are needed. Convenience much?
This is generally the biggest sin of this book. Plot convenience.
Towards the end, the smut gets out of hand and started to just annoy me especially because most of it was just constant repetition almost word for word of earlier scenes.
The finale makes no sense whatsoever or is at least not explained in the least (and a lot of explanation would be necessary to explain this mess).
Lots of facts are made up as they are needed in general and there is almost no prescient setup.
All in all, subpar in all disciplines. ( )

Janet Begay has a very mixed heritage — a human father and a mother from Beneath. This gives her both Earth and Beneath powers. She returns to Magellan to finally come to terms to this conflict within herself. It will take the efforts of all the friends she has made to defeat her evil mother. Looking forward to the next book. A very fluffy "urban fantasy" read. Really it should fall under Paranormal Romance. It's fairly well plot driven, but a lot of the action and angst revolves around relationships, particularly Mick and Janet. Mick as the main male character has definitely been done before - all alpha male, he-who-his-most-likely-to-kick-your-ass, and of course look good doing it, but if you're prepared for or accepting of PNR it's a fun, light read. Janet is the typical PNR female, but she actually has more back bone then most, even if she does go back to the male in her life without to much trouble and the usual gratuitous sex. Maya was really the stand out character to me. She's actually non-magical, but she's got lots of bite.

SPOILERS: pulling a gun on the main character, hiding a body?! I want more main characters like that.

And I actually preferred John Nash to Mick, but that's neither here nor there. ( )

I have mixed feelings about this book, don't get me wrong I enjoyed it - I stayed up til 2 am reading it, which is why it deserves 4 stars. But some things niggled. It tended to be a bit too descriptive in some places: the protagonist was uber-powerful which seemed too easy, and her relationship with her boyfriend didn't seem healthy to me, even though I liked him. It was already dark by the time I zoomed out of the mountains, heading east towards the deserts and the town of Magellan.
