Jason Sanford - Sublimation angels
Sublimation angels are puffs of evaporating air from a freezing alien planet that, for generations, a human colony has been struggling to survive on, sent out of its orbit into space by the Aurals, inscrutable aliens in the form of balls of light, that the expedition was sent to contact. The story follows the adventures of Chicka, whose brother Omare becomes a human 'angel', seemingly reconstituted after being recycled for not following orders. Very different from the author's previous stories here.
Katherine Sparrow and Rachel Swirsky - No longer you
Simon, a would-be ballet dancer, breaks up with his girlfriend, and meets Aviva. A split-stream narrative hints at how his life will be changed, as Aviva is a different sort of 'person'. Story lacks depth in both the core idea and the writing.
Adrian Joyce - Shucked
A network malevolence invades a company drinks machine, distorting its functionality and spews spam via its displays, then starts to create serious mayhem for the late night worker and the guard who are the only people around. Unsettling but unexplained.
Jeremiah Tolbert - The Godfall's chemsong
Muskblue is a alien sea creature, a member of a pack. She breaks the pack rules to gorge on a drowned body fallen from above (the 'Godfall') she alone detects by its 'chemsong'. She is ostracised and nearly dies, but manages not just to survive but prosper. A Darwinian tale.
Chris Butler - The Festival of Tethselem
An artist and his scholar wife are joined by two men on their journey to a festival held in a massive, ancient city, containing a mysterious artifact, a shrunken image of man, held seemingly forever outside of time. The two men are secretly intent on stealing the artifact. However, meeting a woman grieving for the man in the artifact raises questions about the nature of the artifact. There is a nice twist at the end. (
