Robert Englund, the award-winning actor best known for his role as Freddy Krueger, tells his story in this captivating new memoir, published on the 25th anniversary of the first A Nightmare on Elm Street film. Englund is no monster, but a funny, charming Hollywood veteran. Packed with Robert's hilarious stories, playful self-deprecation, and a generous helping of Nightmare trivia, Hollywood Monster offers an unparalleled look at the beloved film icon. Of course, fame and fortune came years after the young actor shared a trailer with Henry Fonda, was punched in the face by Richard Gere, took down Burt Reynolds, and muscled his way between Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sally Field, and Jeff Bridges. With insider savvy and gallows humor, Robert recounts his audition for Wes Craven, the inspiration for Freddy's character, the grueling makeup sessions, his soon-to-be-famous costars, the on-set blunders, and the wave of popularity that propelled this California surfer kid all the way to the top.--From publisher description.… (más)

I picked this book up because I went to an autograph signing with Mr. Englund to get my Crystal Lake Memories book signed (and how cool does the page look signed on one side by "Freddy" and the other by "Jason", but I digress) but the bookstore claimed that the celebrity would only signed books purchased at the store where the signing was held, which I have experienced before, but Mr. Englund was possibly one of the nicest and most accomodating celebrities I have ever met! Now, after that run-on sentence, don't get the wrong idea. I did want to read Mr. Englund's book also I just didn't want to pay full hardcover price. Although I guess I got my moneys worth, he signed my Crystal Lake Memories and this one, and even threw in a caricature of Freddy under his signature. ANYWAY, after all that rambling, on to the book.
I have read other people's reviews saying that the book wasn't enough about Freddy, or Nightmare on Elm Street, or it didn't have enough behind the scenes, what happened on the Nightmare set stuff. Well I say phooey to that! This book is autobiographical and everyone knows Robert Englund was Freddy. That is probably why most people bought this book in the first place. What I, and I'm assuming most casual fans, don't know is what compromises the other 50 to 75% of the book and that is Mr. Englund's background, what got him into acting, his training and early work, etc. I found all of that information very interesting and loved learning about the man behind the green and red sweater. If you want just Freddy, Freddy, Freddy, you want to be reading "The Nightmare Never Ends: The Official History of Freddy..." If you want to get to know Robert Englund, this book is for you. ( )
