I can see why he annoyed his military superiors. ( ) Classic Churchill, this book is in fact a series of articles that Churchill wrote whilst covering the Boer War (technically the Second Boer War) for the Morning Post. It describes in fluent and vivid Churchillian English the war and the writers part in it including his capture by the Boers, imprisonment and subsequent escape. The beauty of the book is that it shows how Churchill felt at the time and nit from the perspective of later on- ie no twenty twenty hindsight. Each article- ie chapter was written and published before Churchill knew what was going to happen in the next and later chapters. I found it endearing that when he writes about his escape he edits out all mention of the English family that helped him escape to avoid endangering them with the Boer authorities. It is easy reading, but an authentic history of the time. Churchill's respect for the qualities if the Boers comes through but so does his dislike of the Boers racialist view of the blacks which was going to lead to so much trouble later in the 20th Century. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
