( ) I have always been interested in the life and death of Ernesto "Che" Guevara, so when I spotted this in our GN collected I took it home and expected a good story. And I wasn't disappointed -- not with the story, anyway. Although Jacobson keeps stopping the action and backing up to fill in historical facts, Che's life was just so convoluted that recreating it had to take many twists and false starts. One has to have an understanding of why he felt the way he did, and of the histories of the many countries in which he tried to foment revolution, or else one is hopelessly lost. Che was a true idealist, and though he doesn't come off as an unsullied hero, he is also far from villainous. My beef, though, was with the illustrations. Ernie Colon left me so very confused from frame to frame; his style is too changeable for my taste. His depictions of Che were inconsistent -- so much so that at times I confused Che with both Raul and Fidel Castro! However, I feel overall that I know much more about the man and his passions than I did before, and that was the point. Finally I have made it through a biography of Che. You see his image on everything from t-shirts to posters to buttons. People wear his face without really knowing what he is all about. I used to have a poster of him that my parents brought back with them from their trip to Cuba in the 70s. But who is this man? This book reveals Che's life from his birth in Argentina to his death, by execution, in Bolivia. The in between is the interesting part. Che is the embodiment of the "revolution". He lived his life and died his death for the cause of the people. For this, he is deemed to be a hero. Were his struggles worthy of his zeal? Was his death, the abandonment of his family for the cause...were they all worth it? This book allows you to see his life, through the images and the text and decide for yourself.
The graphic format is especially well-suited to these geopolitical sequences, in which multi-page spreads are used to connect the dots between historical events and nations to give a compact but extremely informative tour through the complex story of Latin American colonization and independence as well as the Cold War.
"En esta ocasión se implican en describir la vida de una de las más influyentes y reconocibles figuras del siglo XX el líder contracultural Ernesto "Che" Guevara. Una biografía que comienza con los "diarios de motocicleta" y que repasa su trayectoria, sus ideas y su legado."--Publisher. No se han encontrado descripciones de biblioteca. |
