I have ambivalent feelings about this book. Considering the low word count, there is no reason to have such vast white space and wordless pages. If the illustrations were more unique or appealing my opinion on having large pages would not be that it is wasteful, but it's all that I can think of because the book just isn't great. In addition to the illustrations I found that the text is not very creative with regard to sentence structure, where it seems like it was forced into using plain language in order to rhyme. The part of the book that partially makes up for these downfalls has to be the plot and the big idea presented. The entire book is about the main pig knowing who she is and accepting who she is, and that she won't let name-calling hurt her (Weeks). ( )

This book was a very good read because of the fun illustrations and because of the theme and rhyme feature of the story. When the reader first opens this book they instantly are pulled in by the joyfulness of the illustrations. It is easy to see that the pigs in the story are very happy and enjoying what they are doing and that makes it really fun and happy to read. The second thing that the reader will notice is that the story is written in a rhyming pattern. The rhyming makes the story really flow and makes it easier and more fun to the reader to read the book. Not to mention it can be a teaching tool for kids learning about rhyme scheme. Finally, my favorite part of the book is the theme that people should be happy with exactly who they are. Especially in today's culture, where people are constantly being told who they are, I think it is so important for there to be books out there that are celebrating the fact that who people are is great. Overall, I thought "I'm a Pig" was a really fun read and I would recommend it to other readers.

I’m a Pig is a modern fantasy because it is narrated by a pig and discusses his feelings and aspirations. I enjoyed this book because of it’s positive demeanor and confident message. This books contains interesting, creative pictures as well as simple sentences. I enjoyed how this books had multiple different settings, although the writing didn't tell of a change in setting the pictures featured in the work changed constantly. The overall message of this books was that one should be confident in who they are and embrace their differences. However, I disliked how the narrator put down other creatures in the book. One example is when the pig said "I don't blame you if you're blue. If I were only human I'd be disappointed too". I didn't enjoy how the pig was talking about himself positively by putting down other creatures. Despite this minor negatively I did enjoy the book and the message it portrays.

I liked this book for several reasons. One reason is because it was a rhyming book that could engage young readers. For example, on one page it said,
“For there isn’t any doubt
I’m a pig, I’m a pig,
From my tail to my snout”.
Another reason, is because it had colorful and big pictures related to the words on each page for the children to look at while reading. The big idea of this book is self-esteem. This pig is proud to be a pig, and he shows that throughout the story by repeating himself; for example, “I’m a pig, I’m a pig”. The author encourages its readers to be proud of who they are, and never be ashamed of it. ( )

I liked this book for 3 reasons. First, it has a great central message. The message of this book is to be happy with who you are. It teaches children to accept themselves for who they are and to love themselves for what makes them special. This is so important for children to understand, and parents and teachers must constantly reinforce this. Second, the language in this book is simple. The author uses rhymes throughout the book, making it interesting and memorable. For example, the author writes, “I’m a pig, I’m a pig, and I don’t give a fig if you call me a pig ‘cause that’s what I am.” This is easy for children to read, and many children would find it funny to say “fig” in place of other more mature words. Third, the illustrations are modernized and colorful, drawing children in as they are reading. They are kid-friendly and just silly enough to keep students laughing and engaged. I did not like, however, the fact that some of the illustrations did not directly relate to the story. For instance, when the author writes about “acting like a pig,” the illustration shows the pig riding a scooter while wearing boots and a hat rather than doing pig-like things. Towards the end of the book, the illustrations show the pig winding down for the day, taking a bath, and going to sleep. However, the story never refers to any of these activities. Overall, I enjoyed reading this book and would read it to my students, but I wish that the illustrations were more consistent throughout the book. ( )
