If it were not told from a puffin's point of view, this book would be pure nonfiction. It's a picture-book sized volume of 48 pages, but quite text-heavy, suitable for upper grades of elementary, middle school, or even high school (although the slightly anthropomorphic puffin is just a wee bit whimsical--and on the other hand, the effect of naming her by the research name Q7 is quite odd if the author wants to personalize her). Very accurate and informative story of how an island in Maine is repopulated with Canadian puffins by National Audubon Society scientists.

There are no photos at all, just a few decorative and not very detailed black and white illustrations, about half a dozen in the whole book plus chapter headings.

The text heavy nature of the book and the curious mixture of fantasy and very hard science makes it impossible to read to even the most motivated preschooler. We tried our best. ( )
