Red Star over Malaya is an account of the inter-racial relations between Malays and Chinese during the final stages and the aftermath of the Japanese occupation. As Japanese forces retreated into the big cities, the Chinese guerrillas of the communist-led resistance movement, the Malayan People's Anti-Japanese Army (MPAJA), emerged from the jungle and took control of some 70 per cent of the country's smaller towns and villages. The ensuing conflict involving the Malayan Communist Party, the Malay population, and the British Military Administration marked a crucial stage in the history of Malaya. Based on extensive archival research in Malaysia, Great Britain, Japan and the United States, Red Star Over Malaya provides a riveting account of the way the Japanese occupation reshaped colonial Malaya, and of the tension-filled months that followed surrender. This book is fundamental to an understanding of social and political developments in Malaysia during the second half of the 20th century.… (más)

Red Star over Malaya is factual, well written and engages the reader ( especially if you're Malaysian) with facts, facts and more facts interspersed with anecdotes about places we all know. For instance, one of the anecdotes features Batu Caves prominently as the place where a MPAJ( Malayan People's Anti Japanese) traitor named Lai Tak sold out his entire committee and dealt a huge blow to the resistance. It is Amazing that Lai Tak kept on betraying his comrades and became a powerful presence in the anti Japanese party, although he was selling his comrades out to the Japanese to be killed- not even the returning British could detect his treachery.Such stories abound in this book written by Cheah Boon Kheng- very well researched and well balanced. It focuses on the conflict between the Chinese MPAJ ( later MCP) and the Malays immediately after the Japanese surrender..A very worthwhile and informative read for those who want to know history...
