What if your best friend, whom you've always counted on to flounder in life and love (making your own modest accomplishments look not so bad), suddenly starts to surpass you in every way? Wendy's best friend, Daphne, has always been dependably prone to catastrophe. And Wendy has always been there to help. If Daphne veers from suicidal to madly in love, Wendy offers encouragement. But when Daphne is suddenly engaged, pregnant, and decorating a fabulous town house in no time at all, Wendy is . . . not so happy for her. Caught between wanting to be the best friend she prides herself on being and crippling jealousy of flighty Daphne, Wendy takes things to the extreme, waging a full-scale attack on her best friend -- all the while wearing her best, I'm-so-happy-for-you smile -- and ends up in way over her head. Rosenfeld has a knack for exposing the not-always-pretty side of being best friends -- in writing that is glittering and diamond-sharp. I'm So Happy For You is a smart, darkly humorous, and uncannily dead-on novel about female friendship.… (más)

I couldn't stop thinking that the main character was really an awful human being. I kept reading to be proven wrong. ( )

An incredibly dark book that may be masquerading as chick lit on library shelves and is thus likely to horrify those readers looking for an affirmative, ultimately inspirational take on female friendships. However, if your taste runs more to novels along the lines of Cat's Eye by Margaret Atwood, Veronica by Mary Gaitskill, and The Country Girls Trilogy by Edna O'Brien, then I'm So Happy for You merits reading. Although it lacks the literary force and vivid imagery of those books, it does illuminate a particular type of social circle (upper-middle class/wealthy women in NYC and its environs) as they compete with each other for husbands/lovers, real estate, and babies. Neither of the main characters is particularly likable, and some of the peripheral characters are downright wretched specimens of humanity, but I'm always intrigued by authors who portray flawed characters, so that in itself didn't bother me. Still, Wendy's insecurities and her obsessive desire for a baby as yet another acquisition on the road to "maturity" make for uneasy reading. I personally could have done without the postcript which, although entertaining, sketched out fates for the characters that I would have preferred to imagine for myself. In some ways, it undercuts the powerful ending and gives the book a cutesy quality that I associate more with chick lit. Be forewarned: there are some truly ugly emotions and awkward scenes lurking within the pages of this novel, pretty-dress-cover notwithstanding. ( )

An interesting look at how friendships work and how jealousy creeps into them. ( )
