A basic work on the religious impulse in humanity

Quanto mais poderoso for o numinoso, mais misterioso se tornar, mais “totalmente outro”, não só se torna mais anti-racional, como também mais incoerente, conjugando características racionalmente inconciliáveis num mesmo objecto. O último grau deste paradoxo é a antinomia.

I enjoyed the unfolding of Jungian analysis, the concepts of holy terror and awe, and above all, the feeling of absolute sincerity. This wasn't a book of flowery nonsense, nor was it remotely a self-help book. I believe I'll be thinking about it for years down the line and appreciate a few of the nuances. We shall see. ( )

AWE
Het Engelse woord is moeilijk te vertalen. Ontzag, eerbied, vrees - maar dat is het toch niet. Huiver, geen goed Nederlands woord, komt het dichtst bij de betekenis van awe. Awe, men moet naar dit woord luisteren. Rudolf Otto maakte in zijn befaamde boek Das Heilige de woorden numineus en het numineuze, als hij 'die eigentümliche Kategorie des Heiligen' wenst te benoemen. Hij heeft het woord afgeleid van numen, dat wenk betekent: gebiedende knik. In het verlengde daarvan: goddelijk bevel, goddelijke macht.
Wij kennen het allen. Niet alleen en zelfs niet allereerst in verband met een kerk of een tempel. Een landschap kan numineus zijn. Een bosrand in de lichte nevel van een herfstavond. De woestijn! Wie de Dode Zee ziet met haar loden water, met de uitgemergelde rotsen aan deze en aan de overzijde van het meer, met de enkele, haast onmogelijke oase, kan vermoeden dat het land daar, hoe anders het wellicht vroeger heeft geleken, eremieten herbergde, profeten voortbracht, en tot de vreemdste bespiegelingen aanleiding gaf.
Daar, in de aanwezigheid van awe, van numen, begint elk geloof. Geen mens zou ertoe komen een tempel, een kapel, een kerk te bouwen wanneer de aarde niet verschillend bedeeld was met numen. Waar overvloed bestond van dat numen, daar werd het heiligdom gebouwd.

Dit bewonderenswaardige boek is in godsdienstwetenschap en -filosofie nog altijd een topper. Hoewel het heilige ook rationele kanten heeft, zoekt Otto het meest eigene van het religieuze in de niet-rationele ervaring van 'het numineuze': in wat ons diep aangrijpt en ontroert zonder dat wij het nu direct kunnen benoemen. Vandaar het befaamde, door hem geijkte begrip 'mysterium tremendum et fascinosum': het mysterie dat ons doet huiveren en tegelijk ook fascineert, terwijl het zich onttrekt aan onze begrippen. In zijn onderzoek van het heilige, dat hij prachtig weet te verwoorden, betrekt hij behalve de bijbel en niet-christelijke godsdiensten ook poezie en kunsten als muziek. Wie zijn godsbegrip zoekt te verhelderen, kan niet om dit boek heen. D. Mok heeft de tweede druk uit 1963 van deze vertaling stilistisch gemoderniseerd. Doordat hij aan de oorspronkelijke vertaling soms bladzijdenlange, overigens op zich zinvolle, passages toevoegt waarvan de herkomst niet altijd duidelijk is (komen ze in twijfelgevallen uit andere geschriften van Otto?), leent de uitgave zich niet zonder meer voor wetenschappelijk gebruik. Fear of the Shadow, the daemon, is the beginning of subjective religious experience according to Rudolf Otto in The Idea of the Holy. Our utterly deferential fright is encapsulated in that hoary Old Testament expression, “the Wrath of Yahweh.” (18) Otto calls it the numinous experience, when our “blood runs cold” and our “flesh creeps.” We recognize the sacred, the hallowed, the holy when it triggers an acute and overwhelming emotion, all out of proportion to the event – wonder, awe, astonishment, stupor, dread. “Here we have a terror fraught with an inward shuddering such as not even the most menacing and overpowering created thing can instill. It has something spectral in it.” (14) This is the encounter with the divine, that which is “wholly other” from the physical/rational self, that which is “wholly other” from what can be recognized or understood.

The ancients accepted the ineffable experience as a part of physical reality. They saw spirits in rocks and rivers. The hibernating beast came out of an uncanny place. Wild animals looked at people with the eyes of disguised gods. And the boldest of ancient people, as do bold people throughout time, sought to harness some small part of that ineffable power and energy. Magic was born – the effort “to appropriate the prodigious force of the numen for the natural ends of man.” (33)
