Author's favorite phrase in this book: he/she "started violently". While people can be startled, it is not common to startle violently every time someone comes upon you. I just get the image of people jumping out of their seats and screaming. Aside from that, the book had a promising beginning, but is rather light on the historical detail. After the hero picks up his neglected, but now (thankfully)grown-up wife, and brings her back to their castle, the hero and heroine jump each others bones about every other page. The heroine suffered from the "I should hate him but he makes me melt" syndrome and the hero suffered from "I am so crazy for her but I won't tell her" syndrome. The former mistress and the former betrothed of the H and h are thrown in for some additional conflict and misunderstandings. Oddly enough, the book improved somewhat in the second half and I got sucked into the story. The ending was sweet but could have used an epilogue. Not a keeper, but mildly entertaining. 3/5 stars ( )
