The big idea of this story is that even though a plan may not work out as planned, you can still have a great time! The Critter family had planned a day for a family picnic but everywhere they went there was something or someone stopping them! Eventually they ended up back at home, where they had a relaxing picnic in their living room. They even ate on their red and white checked picnic blanket, and read a story to end the day. Students can learn that although the day or event doesn't seem to be going as planned they can still have a great time, as long as they are together with the ones they love and care about. ( )
