I checked this book out of the library and liked it so much I went and got my own copy. I knew about the two authors from their poems but did not know about this book based on their classroom experience with beginning writers until I just stumbled across it. It is packed with a number of practical tips and exercises to stimulate the writer. They really emphasize the importance of breaking preconceived ideas of how far a poet can go, giving lots of examples of some boundary breaking idea or technique which they then encourage their readers and students to try out for themselves. Most of these were new to me and quite inspirational in a practical fashion. Although it dates from a number of years ago it doesn't feel dated, though I am sure if they revised it they would be able to come up with numerous new examples and techniques to talk about. ( )

A great book! Not every chapter was useful as the others, but such is the nature of a book that tries to address a wide range of issues. I found it very helpful overall, it's made me feel more confident in my approach to the writing process and I was regularly writing myself notes to keep in mind later. ( )

Exercises for writing poetry. Examples of poetry. I always find myself skipping the chapter on writing erotic poetry. Some good ideas here, but I haven't actually put any of them to use. Although I may end up with a sestina. ( )

First of all I will say I am a huge fan of Addonizio's poetry, and when I had to buy this for a creative writing class (when usually I moan about buying textbooks), I bought it with such pride and excitement, I didn't mind standing in line for the good half an hour at my college. Like I've said before in previous reviews and on my profile, poetry is a huge passion of mine and though I try to have a schedule when I write, of course, like all writers, my head gets clouded. That's where this wonderful, handy little guide comes in. Filled with dozens of ideas, it should keep anyone writing for days. I also really loved that, on top of my ever growing love for poetry, it made me appreciate it more and even introduced me to new poets and poems I fell in love with. This is a must have for every poet. ( )

Good insights on the process of writing and compelling writing ideas and exercises from two engaging, accessible poets whose work I admire and enjoy. I especially liked the "Twenty-Minute Exercises" section. ( )
