This is a middle grade inspirational book about a boy and his dog. It is fictional and geared for older readers considering that it is a chapter book. Treasure in a Oatmeal box is a classic tale of the friendship between a boy and his dog his best friend. Personally, I think this a great book that shows a story a shy handicapped boy who finds a friend in a dog. They understand each other, al quirks in all. In class, some students may connect to this story because of its strong theme of love and compassion. Others would not because their is not a whole lot of action. Some things that would be good to talk about in class would be, how would you feel if you were in his place? How do you think the dog feels? This would be a great book to use in the classroom for talking about handicaps. Could not be used in public schools, given it is a Christian book.
This is a chapter book so there is only the illustration on the front cover. The cover is done very well in my opinion trying to set how the author wants the story to thought to look as. The colors are natural colors with a muted pencil like quality. ( )
