It is more or less pasted together from oral histories, letters, citations, after-action reports and other books and documents. If this seems confusing then it is much like combat. Everyone sees a very small slice of what is going on. If you think you know what is going on you are most likely completely lost. This book is especially interesting as it also covers the action and experience of the Dutch Underground. They were well-organized, efficient and very brave. They were of great help to the paratroopers and the glider troops that come to liberate them. The mission of the liberating troops was to take and hold the area until relieved by the oncoming invasion armies. The combat was hard and casualties were high. As said, the 'writing' was the accounts both oral and written of a lot of various eyewitnesses. As a result it is not a smooth and flowing account but it is stark and often terrible. A very great number of people are mentioned by name. In some cases it is their only memorial. I can recommend this book. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
The author of The Battered Bastards of Bastogne does a "superb job of telling the history the 101st Airborne Division during Operation Market Garden" (Kepler's Book Reviews). Hell's Highway is a history, most of which has never before been written. It is adventure recorded by those who lived it and put into context by an author who was also there. It is human drama on an enormous scale, told through the personal stories of 612 contributors of written and oral accounts of the Screaming Eagles' part in the attempt to liberate the Netherlands. Koskimaki is an expert in weaving together individual recollections to make a compelling and uniquely first-hand account of the bravery and deprivations suffered by the troops, and their hopes, fears, triumphs, and tragedies, as well as those of Dutch civilians caught up in the action. There have been many books published on Operation Market Garden and there will surely be more. This book, however, gets to the heart of the action. The "big picture," which most histories paint, here is just the context for the real history on the ground. No se han encontrado descripciones de biblioteca. |
