Based on St. Francis, this story displays the main character as being full of God's love and able to overcome all with his faith. Francis is able to sing out to the world while being followed by his little angel. He sings for all to hear and for all of nature and heaven to enjoy. ( )

I enjoyed the themes but the story itself was rather weak.

The papercut illustrations were different from dePaola's usual fare, but I liked them. Simple book here about St. Francis of Asissi. Would give it a 2.5, given the chance, but it's worth the round-up to a 3. ( )

Review: This is the story of Francis of Assisi and his song/prayer to the animals. Tomie dePaola, uses beautiful art work, and kid friendly language to express the feelings of gratitude, love and pray in this stunning piece of Children’s Literature.

Genre: I would say that this genre is religious/historical biography/poetry. This book’s main themes center around the ancient religious figure, Francis of Assisi. They tell of the prayer he prayed, but in a kid-friendly way. Since this book is one of his prayers transferred into a Children’s book, it could also almost be considered poetry.
