This is the story of a mouse who comes to scavenge scraps from a big Thanksgiving feast. He starts with a single pea, but then he sees one of another item, and another. Eventually he is holding a huge precarious stack of scraps, when finally the family cat wakes up. His pile topples, and he finally makes it out with just the single pea he started with.

The kids I read this to, loved this story. I think they expected that he would not be able to carry his ridiculous looking load, and seemed skeptical each time he insisted on just one more. I liked this because it was lighthearted, funny, can be read quickly, but can also be read in a lengthy manner lingering over the beautifully detailed illustrations. This story could be used as a starter for talking about taking only what you need, an aspect of greed. I loved it.

This is a good book about Thanksgiving leftovers and how a little mouse has big adventures in trying to get a his share of thanksgiving leftovers. The pictures are so detailed and acurate that with the story, it makes it a joy to read. ( )

I like this book for a few reasons. The first and main reason I enjoyed this book was for its illustrations. Ebbeler created beautiful visual aides that are from the perspective of a small mouses, making everything look ginormous. The smallest of portions of food appear to be as big as a person and the people look to be the size of skyscrapers. The colors that Ebbeler used are very realistic and bright which makes the illustrations very appealing to the eye. The next reason I really liked this book was for the storyline itself. The story is in third person telling a Thanksgiving tale in the perspective of a mouse. The mouse only takes one because one is a feast for a mouse, but then he sees another item of food, and another, and wants to take one of everything. However, one of everything is too much and the cat notices what he is doing and chases him away, causing the mouse to only have what he started off with, the pea. The main message behind this story is the reason why I like this book so much. The main message is to give thanks even if all you have is one little piece of food, because one piece could always be a feast. ( )
